With 'Quotidian Striving' I explore daily the potential difference between work and toil as long as the exhibition is open to the public.
Six pieces of wood are held together with tape to form a star. The end of the tape is attached to a clamp at the ceiling of the exhibition space. This is repeated the next day with a new object. They unravel in their own time, accumulating in the space.

QUEENSWAY Sonke Faltien

A tunnel is purely practical, built to overcome obstacles posed by nature. It forms

the shortest, technically feasible connection between two points and creates a

space with established patterns and rules of movement. In travelling through a

tunnel we conform to these rules and become passengers of our own motion.

With no choice over our physical movement, our thoughts are free to wander and

recollect other journeys and other expanses. It is this relationship between natural

space and functional, industrial construction that Sonke Faltien explores in his film

QUEENSWAY.

Sonke Faltien focuses on the Queensway Tunnel under the Mersey as it was the

longest road tunnel in the world when opened in the twilight of the Empire in 1934.

Designed as a two-storey construction it was a considerable technical and

architectural achievement at the time, reflecting the United Kingdom’s image of itself

as a world power and Liverpool’s dominant role in industry and trade.

The strict limitations on movement imposed by the architecture of a tunnel create a

sense of disorientation which encourages the tendency for our thoughts to drift. The

monotony of movement in the tunnel causes reference points in time and space to shift

and this spatial and chronological blurring creates new space for our thoughts to expand,

and so undermines the linear experience of a tunnel crossing.
